The Newton Abbot DC Power Station

Capacity 520 kw - 3 x 40 + 2 x 200 kw

1923 The Front View

The original Boiler House to the left - Boilers 1 - 4. DC Generators in the centre building and work shop to the right.

1923 Engine Room

A view towards the front of the station. The three 40 kw generators and one 200 kw generator were removed to accomodate Steam tirbines 1 and 2 - ex Torquay Power Station. Note the first 200kw generator is being dismantled in this picture.

1924 The Front View

Note the roof profile expanding to include the new Generator 3 and boilers 5 and 6.

1926 Front View

Another stack for Generator 4 and Boilers 7 and 8.

The Generator 3 Basement

The condensor supporting Generator 3 is in the middle of the picture and Generators 1 and 2 ex Torquay are in the distance. The 11 kv cellular switchboard is on the left hand side

The Governor Gear

The BTH Turbines used throughout the station were very similar in layout and design - just got bigger with time - the speeder gear driven from the main shaft drove the main oil pump,

1926 and two Smart new Generators

The closest machine is No 4, then No 3 and below the roof in the distance lays Generators 1 and 2 ex Torquay together with two rotary converters taking over duty from the original DC machines. One 200 kw DC machine was retained.

A later date

Little change in view but a number of years later - Generators 1 and 2 have been removed and a new metalclad switchroom established in their place.

The Low Pressure Boilers

They look smart in the picture but this was 'hell' when operating!

Stumpy stacks for boilers 9 and 10 to power Generator 5

1929

The turbine hall at this time was just long enough to accomodate generator 5
